Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

My name is Miss Nuttall, and I'm very excited to be teaching in Year 1! I have a love for traveling and visiting different countries with my friends and family. I am the proud owner of two adorable dogs which Year 1 will get to hear lots about! My hobbies include dancing and reading, I can't wait to share my favourite stories with my new class.

In Year 1, we have a nurturing environment where all children continue to flourish and develop their independence and curiosity through play as they transition into Key Stage 1.

The children learn through a balance of independent continuous provision, guided activities and adult led focus groups. Through the provision, all child will have the opportunity to be a historian, an artist, a scientist, a mathematician, a storyteller, a geographer and even an architect. The provision inspires the children to consolidate their skills, knowledge and understanding and enables them to be independent, resilient learners who motivate themselves to take on their next challenge and challenge themselves to be the best that they can be.

The children’s learning is planned around high-quality texts, which immerse the children in our topics, encourage exploration and promote a love of reading. The children are encouraged to read for pleasure and we also build upon their comprehensions skills by introducing inference, prediction and expression when reading. An emphasis is placed on phonics in Year 1, in preparation for the Phonics Screening in the Summer Term. Phonics sessions are fun, fast-paced and involve lots of games and exciting tasks.

The format of the children's learning gradually becomes more structured and formal as the year progresses. This is to prepare them for their transition into Year 2 and is a slow and steady process, with small adjustments through the year.
