Book Week incorporating World Book Day 2023

English Martyrs Book Week

W/C 27th February

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum here at English Martyrs and we pride ourselves on having a range of books and quality texts for pupils to read across school. This is ever expanding and we have ambitious plans to continue improving our reading provision across the school.

Dedicating a whole week to Book Week at English Martyrs is important in order to recognise and celebrate the wide range of texts, authors, illustrators and experiences that come with picking up a book.

Please see our rich list of opportunities for pupils across the school that will take place during our Book Week. We are hoping to organise visits to Urmston Library this week as well with details to be confirmed for each class.

Our teachers will be visiting different classes this week to read an end of the day story to the class, each class gets a surprise teacher visitor, who will it be for your child’s class!

Teachers also don’t miss out on all the fun, they are encouraged to dress up too on World Book Day and each class will be decorating their classroom doors in a book sleeve theme or with photographs and other work on to celebrate the reading in their rooms. Prizes will be award for our winning class and teachers for the best decorated doors!

And finally……

On Tuesday 14th March, we have a local Poet Matt Goodfellow visiting us in school and working with our Key Stage 2 Pupils to develop their love of Poetry. In our recent reading survey, we followed on from our pupil voice response, as pupils would like to know more poets and become more confident in their poetry work. Matt Goodfellow, is a Stockport-Based poet, whom has had multiple poetry books published and will be leading on fantastic workshops for pupils to develop a love of rhyme, playing with words and poems. We can’t wait for this fantastic experience.

Poetry books by Matt are available online to purchase or from Urmston Bookshop.
